But while they work belatedly to address this priority through Seamless Access RA21GetFTRand even partnerships with ResearchGatethe savviest of them are keeping their eyes on the true structural transformation that the internet has wrought. We are witnessing the transformation away from a journal-centric model of scholarly publishing towards a researcher-centric model of scholarly communication. Success in this new environment requires engagement with researcher identity, which is a struggle even for most of the largest publishing houses.

Who is competing to own researcher identity and how can other publishers engage this vital role? The researcher-centric model of scholarly communication has been emerging gradually and growing steadily. Researcher-centric scholarly communication enables collaboration, supports workflow, and provides personalization.

The evidence of the shift to a researcher-centric approach is everywhere. Discovery of the scholarly literature has moved away from browsing individual journal titles and towards searches, feeds, and alerts, among other mechanisms that are increasingly personalized and that look across the literature as a whole. Open access is driving publishers to focus on author relations when in the past library relations took greater primacy. Scholars are adopting an array of tools for managing the research enterprise, seeking tools that enable laboratory-based team science and cross-institutional collaborations, including lab notebooks and other types of sharing and collaboration spaces.

Universities are looking to showcase scholars as universities compete with one another for research funding and assess scholars for their potential to contribute to this competition. Each of these dynamics, and others like them, may seem to the publisher as requiring a slight adaptation, but collectively they suggest the emergence of a new type of model. This new model provides services based on extensive information about the researcher and the connections among individual researchers.

To be sure, the impact factor and the journal title remain important, more important than some would like.

In its place we are seeing a growth in the importance of other kinds of research artifacts, not only preprints but also everything from datasets to protocols. It is possible to imagine these artifacts grouped tidily by existing publishers, titles, and articles — but the reality of the scientific process is that these artifacts are more likely project-based, laboratory-based, or researcher-based, not publisher-based.

At this point, we have not seen a complete transition away from journal-centric publishing. Instead, this is a hybrid period, perhaps one that will ultimately have been transitional, that includes traditional journal-centric publishing alongside these newer approaches that increasingly center on the researcher.

And to do that requires that publishers and other providers find ways to center their work, in a technical sense, on the researchers themselves. The key enabling factor in this transformation is researcher identity. Researcher identity, as I use the term, has two common elements. First, there is a mechanism for individual researchers to express and ideally control aspects of their identity.

The user account can ultimately be associated with a variety of tools and dashboards that are customized to them.

This can include co-authors, laboratory members, collaborators elsewhere, others interested in the same research topics, and so forth. This social graph will typically be both inter-institutional and intra-institutional — put another way, it is largely non-institutional and certainly it is not publisher-specific.

Together, the user accounts and social graphs can follow a variety of formats and be subject to a variety of different controls. There are many different instances of standard format and control.

For example, Google controls an enormous identity instance for all of its consumer Google accounts enabling the use of Gmail, Google Docs, etc. At the same time, it also allows companies and schools to utilize their own identity instances for their employees and students through GSuite enabling the use of Gmail, Docs, etc, in an institutionally controlled environment.

Identity instances enable the kind of researcher-centricity discussed above, and they can contain and manage an enormous amount of user data.

As a result, the control of identity instances, and how, if at all, they interoperate is a strategic issue. It is possible for identity instances to follow open models and for multiple identity instances to be interoperable. Yet it is often the case that the organization that controls one identity instance feels responsibility for — or value in — maintaining a stronger degree of control.

As we now turn to reviewing some of the identity instances for researcher identity, it will become clear that what might be best for researchers is not the same as what is emerging in the marketplace. A decentralized approach to managing researcher identity would be in the best interest of researchers themselves. At its essence, a decentralized approach would provide user accounts controlled by the researchers themselves and made available to a platform provider on an opt-in and as-needed basis.

I wrote in about the benefits of a single user accountproviding a researcher identity instance that would be cross-university and cross-publisher, combining authorization as well as personalization. The technical architecture exists to develop this kind of research identity instanceas scholarly communication visionary Herbert Van de Sompel has recognizedbut decentralization adds a challenging sociopolitical impediment.

BYU has led some efforts to bring a version of this approach into being for its students through what it has called a personal API.This was one of the best organised holidays that we have been on having travelled in the USA, Canada and Europe. He accommodated everything we wanted to do, and it was so easy dealing with him.

Everything on the trip was absolutely fantastic. The only thing we wanted was more time!.

ORCID, Scopus, Publons, Google Scholar: Making Sense of Research Profiles and Identities

The holiday was amazing, we loved it so much and both want to move to Iceland. After doing a lot of searching and reading online through various tour companies this was by far the most complete with the most combination of activities that I wanted. Normally, I book everything on my own to try and save money where I can, but having the logistics and bookings handled by someone else was a big relief given such a huge schedule and amount of ground to be covered.

Communication was very good, all questions answered and I was taken care of very well. Tried my hand at the photo of the month contest offered and was lucky enough to win it. Very cool experience and very happy with everything. Would definitely recommend to others and be ready to book more adventures for myself when the time comes. Fantastic experience for a family of 4 - the girls enjoyed it very much. The weather was great and we saw so many amazing things including the Northern lights :) We all loved it - thanks for arranging.

He made the experience pleasant from start of investigation through the entire process. The welcome pack was fantastic and the simple inclusion of a local mobile was a masterstroke. We honestly cant say enough good things about Nordic Visitor and Iceland in general. She was very helpful and accommodating. Due to my travel dates being outside the original tour allotted time, I was easily able to add dates and activities.

I felt her services were individualized and felt that my needs and interests were met. I will keep Nordic Visitor in mind the next time I plan a solo trip. Our experience with Nordic Visitor is absolutely delightful. We are very impressed by the professionalism of the staff and the seamless organisation of the tour. Our holiday was enjoyable beyond our expectations. We were happy and pleased with our total experience booking our vacation with Nordic Visitor that we want to do it again. We have already recommended it to family and friends Overall excellent trip and we really enjoyed ourselves.

We spent a lot of time exploring Reykjavik on foot and loved it. We both felt the trip too short in the end and wished we could stay longer.

I definitely plan on returning to Iceland for a longer duration and during a different time of the year, I would love to see more of the country. I totally loved the idea of the self drive tour. It was my first self drive tour, and i would like to explore as many places this manner. I hope to do Scotland and Norway with you soon. We had a wonderful ten days touring every passable road in the West and South of Iceland.

We saw fantastic Northern lights. Met some amazing people. I just wish all the street and towns had twenty less letters. Aevar did an excellent job helping us when we had a problem with our rental car. Very helpful and efficient. Thank you, again Aevar. We were absolutely delighted with our visit to Iceland and were so glad we were able to circle the entire country.Except as otherwise noted, the content of this page is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.

Note: This document describes both batch prediction and online prediction. Online prediction is a Beta feature of Cloud ML Engine. It might be changed in backward-incompatible ways and is not subject to any SLA or deprecation policy. How it works The Cloud ML Engine prediction service manages computing resources in the cloud to run your models.

Here is the process to get set up to make predictions in the cloud: You export your model using SavedModel as part of your training application. Note: You can use batch prediction to get inferences for a SavedModel that isn't deployed to Cloud ML Engine. You format your input data for prediction and request either online prediction or batch prediction When you use online prediction, the service runs your saved model and returns the requested predictions as the response message for the call.

Your model version is deployed in the region you specified when you created the model. Although it is not guaranteed, a model version that you use regularly is generally kept ready to run. When you use batch prediction, the process is a little more involved: The prediction service allocates resources to run your job. The service restores your TensorFlow graph on each allocated node.

The prediction service distributes your input data across the allocated nodes. Model deployment Cloud ML Engine can host your models so that you can get predictions from them in the cloud. About models and versions Cloud ML Engine organizes your trained models using resources called models and versions. What's in a version. Naming models and versions Model and version names must: Contain only (case-sensitive) mixed-case letters, numbers, and underscores.

Begin with a letter. Contain 128 or fewer characters. Be unique within a given project (for models) or model (for versions). There are no rules for names beyond those technical requirements, but here are some best-practices: Model names should be descriptive and distinctiveyou may need to pick them out of lists of many names in logs or reports.

Version names are best kept short and simple. Model and version limits The Cloud ML Engine quota policy sets a limit of 100 models per project and limits the total number of versions (combined between all models) to 200.

Model deployment parameters Cloud ML Engine needs some information to create your model version. Version name A name for the new version that is unique among the names of other versions of the model. Description You can provide a description for your version. Deployment URI You must provide the URI of the Cloud Storage location where your SavedModel is stored. Cloud ML Engine pulls the model from this location and deploys it.

This parameter is called --origin in the gcloud ml-engine versions create command. Runtime version Cloud ML Engine uses the latest stable runtime version to deploy your model version unless you specify a different supported one. The runtime version primarily determines the version of TensorFlow that the prediction service uses to run your model. When you run a batch prediction job you have the option of overriding the assigned runtime version.

Online prediction always uses the runtime version set when the model version is deployed. Manual scaling You can specify the number of training nodes to keep running for your model version. Warning: When you manually set the number of nodes to keep ready for your version, those nodes are considered to be constantly in use, even when not serving predictions.

This means that you are charged the hourly rate for each node from the moment you create the version until you delete it. You can't change this value without deploying your model to a different version.Lissa, United States South Iceland at Leisure, September 2015 Sigfus provided excellent services and even met with us on our first day in Iceland.
